Ingredients

  • 300 g Ground beef
  • 300 g Ground pork
  • 60 g Breadcrumbs
  • 120 ml Whole milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 medium, finely chopped Yellow onion
  • 60 g Butter
  • 30 g All-purpose flour
  • 400 ml Beef broth
  • 120 ml Heavy cream
  • 0.25 tsp Nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp Allspice
  • 2.5 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp, freshly ground Black pepper
  • 120 ml Lingonberry preserves
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1

In a small mixing bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 5 minutes until the breadcrumbs absorb the milk and soften.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, soaked breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, 1.5 tsp of salt, nutmeg, allspice, and 0.5 tsp of black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Do not overmix.

Step 3

Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. You should have approximately 30 meatballs.

Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, cooking them for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently to brown all sides. Remove the cooked meatballs from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.

Step 5

In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture turns golden brown.

Step 6

Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to medium-low and stir in the heavy cream.

Step 7

Season the gravy with the remaining 1 tsp of salt and 0.5 tsp of black pepper. Simmer the gravy for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.

Step 8

Return the meatballs to the skillet with the gravy. Simmer them in the sauce for 10 minutes, ensuring they are fully cooked and heated through.

Step 9

Serve the Swedish meatballs hot with a spoonful of lingonberry preserves on the side. Optionally, pair them with mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles for a complete meal.
