Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 250 grams ground pork
  • 70 grams breadcrumbs
  • 120 milliliters milk
  • 1 medium, finely chopped onion
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground allspice
  • 0.25 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 480 milliliters beef broth
  • 120 milliliters heavy cream
  • 0 lingonberry jam (optional, for serving)
  • 0 mashed potatoes (optional, for serving)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to absorb the liquid.

Step 2

Add the ground beef, ground pork, finely chopped onion, egg, ground allspice, ground nutmeg, salt, and black pepper to the bowl. Mix gently with your hands until the ingredients are just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the meatballs tender.

Step 3

Using slightly wet hands, shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on a plate or baking sheet.

Step 4

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Working in batches, brown the meatballs on all sides until golden. Transfer them to a plate and set aside. Repeat with the remaining meatballs, using more butter as needed.

Step 5

Once all the meatballs are browned, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the same skillet over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, whisking constantly, until the mixture turns light golden brown.

Step 6

Gradually whisk in the beef broth, making sure to scrape up any browned bits at the bottom of the pan. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until slightly thickened.

Step 7

Stir in the heavy cream and return the meatballs to the skillet. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the meatballs are fully cooked and the sauce has thickened.

Step 8

Serve the Swedish meatballs hot, with a generous spoonful of the creamy gravy. Optionally, pair them with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam for a traditional Swedish meal.
