Nutrition Facts for Swedish kringle

Swedish Kringle

Indulge in the delicate, buttery layers of Swedish Kringle, a traditional Scandinavian pastry that's equal parts flaky, rich, and irresistibly sweet. This recipe combines two layers—one a tender pastry crust and the other a choux-style dough—baked to golden perfection and then topped with a luscious almond glaze and crunchy sliced almonds. The kringle's signature flavor comes from the fragrant almond extract, which enhances both the filling and the icing. Perfect as a centerpiece for brunch or a sweet treat with coffee, this dessert is surprisingly simple to make in just 30 minutes of prep time. Whether you're recreating nostalgic Scandinavian flavors or looking for an elegant pastry to impress guests, Swedish Kringle delivers a light, airy texture paired with sweet, nutty decadence that melts in your mouth.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 tablespoon sliced almonds

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

To make the crust, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 cup of cold unsalted butter in a large bowl. Using a pastry cutter or your hands, blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 3

Add 3 tablespoons of cold water to the crumb mixture and mix until a dough forms. Divide the dough into two equal portions.

Step 4

On the prepared baking sheet, pat each portion of dough into a long oval shape, approximately 12 inches long and 3 inches wide. These will form the bases of your kringles.

Step 5

For the filling layer, heat 1 cup of water and 1 cup of unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat until the mixture boils.

Step 6

Remove the saucepan from heat and immediately stir in 1 cup of all-purpose flour, mixing vigorously until the dough comes together and pulls away from the sides of the pan.

Step 7

Let the dough cool for 5 minutes, then beat in 3 large eggs, one at a time, making sure each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in 1 teaspoon of almond extract.

Step 8

Spread the filling mixture evenly over each pastry base prepared on the baking sheet.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes, or until the kringles are golden brown and puffed. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.

Step 10

To make the almond glaze, whisk together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and 1 teaspoon of almond extract in a small bowl until smooth. Adjust the consistency with more milk if needed.

Step 11

Drizzle the glaze over the cooled kringles and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of sliced almonds for garnish.

Step 12

Cut the kringles into slices and serve. Enjoy!
