Ingredients

  • 1 head Green cabbage
  • 500 g Ground beef
  • 250 g Ground pork
  • 200 g Cooked rice
  • 1 medium, finely chopped Yellow onion
  • 1 large Egg
  • 120 ml Milk
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp Nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 400 ml Beef broth
  • 200 ml Tomato puree
  • 1 tbsp Brown sugar

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F).

Step 2

Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil. Carefully peel off 12-14 leaves from the cabbage head, keeping them intact.

Step 3

Blanch the cabbage leaves in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes until pliable. Remove and set aside to cool.

Step 4

In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and sauté the chopped onion until soft and translucent. Remove from heat.

Step 5

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, cooked rice, sautéed onion, egg, milk, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Mix well to create the filling.

Step 6

Trim the thick core from the base of each cabbage leaf to make it easier to roll.

Step 7

Place a generous spoonful of the filling in the center of each cabbage leaf. Fold the sides in, then roll tightly to secure the filling. Repeat until all the filling is used.

Step 8

In a large oven-safe skillet or baking dish, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish.

Step 9

In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth, tomato puree, and brown sugar to create the sauce.

Step 10

Pour the sauce evenly over the cabbage rolls, ensuring they are mostly covered.

Step 11

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes.

Step 12

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, allowing the rolls to brown slightly on top.

Step 13

Let the cabbage rolls rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy with boiled potatoes or lingonberry jam if desired.
