Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter
  • 0.75 cup Milk
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1.5 tsp Baking powder
  • 0.25 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Small candies (e.g., M&M's, gummies, chocolate chips)
  • 2 cups Buttercream frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • 0.25 cup Sprinkles (optional, for decoration)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large bowl, use a hand or stand mixer to cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Add the eggs one at a time into the butter-sugar mixture, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 5

Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk into the wet mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Step 6

Divide the batter evenly among the 12 cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full. Smooth the tops with the back of a spoon for even baking.

Step 7

Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool completely on a wire rack.

Step 8

Once cooled, use a small knife or cupcake corer to cut out the center of each cupcake, about 1 inch deep. Save the removed cake tops.

Step 9

Fill each hollowed center with your choice of small candies. Place the reserved cake tops back over the filled centers to seal the cupcakes.

Step 10

Spread or pipe buttercream frosting over each cupcake, covering the sealed centers completely.

Step 11

Decorate the cupcakes with sprinkles, if desired. Serve and enjoy the surprise inside!
