Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups apples, peeled and finely chopped
  • 0.5 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan and line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Whisk well to evenly distribute the dry ingredients.

Step 3

In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, unsweetened applesauce, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.

Step 4

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently with a spatula until no streaks of flour remain. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 5

Fold in the chopped apples and walnuts (if using) until evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Step 6

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

Step 8

Remove the loaf from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes. Then, use the parchment paper to lift the loaf out and transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 9

Slice the bread into thick slices and serve. Enjoy as is, or with a slather of butter or cream cheese!
