Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 unit large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup jelly or jam
  • 4 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 0.5 cup powdered sugar

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt. Mix thoroughly to combine the dry ingredients.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, heat the whole milk and unsalted butter over low heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm (about 110°F). Do not let it get too hot.

Step 3

Add the warm milk mixture and large egg to the dry ingredients. Stir until a soft dough forms.

Step 4

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.

Step 5

Place the dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.

Step 6

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release air and transfer it back to the floured surface.

Step 7

Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness and use a 3-inch round cutter to cut out circles. Re-roll the scraps as needed.

Step 8

Place the dough circles on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with a towel, and let them rest for 30 minutes to puff up slightly.

Step 9

In a deep pot or skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat to 350°F. Carefully fry 2-3 doughnuts at a time for about 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate.

Step 10

Once all the doughnuts are fried and slightly cooled, use a small piping bag fitted with a round nozzle to inject each doughnut with jelly or jam.

Step 11

Dust the filled doughnuts generously with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy!
