Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (85% lean)
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, sliced
  • 8 oz Cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups Beef broth
  • 2 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 tbsp Ketchup
  • 0.5 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval patties about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 3

Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once melted, add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

Step 4

In the same skillet, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and mushrooms and sauté for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown.

Step 5

Sprinkle the flour over the onion and mushroom mixture and stir well to coat. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.

Step 6

Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add the ketchup and Dijon mustard, then bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 7

Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover the skillet with a lid and reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer for 15 minutes, occasionally spooning gravy over the patties to keep them moist.

Step 8

Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper, if needed.

Step 9

Sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving, if desired. Serve the Salisbury steak hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles to soak up the rich gravy.
