Ingredients

  • 14 ounces extra-firm tofu
  • 0.5 cup coconut aminos
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tablespoon monk fruit sweetener
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil (like avocado oil or grapeseed oil)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons sliced green onions (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Drain the tofu and press it to remove excess liquid. Use a tofu press or wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy object on top for 15 minutes.

Step 2

While the tofu is being pressed, prepare the teriyaki sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together the coconut aminos, rice vinegar, grated fresh ginger, minced garlic, monk fruit sweetener, and sesame oil.

Step 3

In a separate small dish, mix the cornstarch with water to create a slurry. Set both the sauce and the slurry aside.

Step 4

Once the tofu is pressed, cut it into 1-inch cubes.

Step 5

Heat 2 tablespoons of neutral oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook for 8–10 minutes, turning occasionally, until all sides are golden brown and crispy. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.

Step 6

In the same skillet, pour the prepared teriyaki sauce. Bring it to a simmer over medium heat.

Step 7

Stir the cornstarch slurry again, then slowly whisk it into the simmering sauce. Cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.

Step 8

Return the crispy tofu to the skillet, tossing it gently to coat each piece in the sauce. Cook for 2–3 more minutes until the tofu is heated through.

Step 9

Remove the skillet from heat and sprinkle sesame seeds over the tofu. Garnish with sliced green onions, if desired.

Step 10

Serve the Sugar-Free Teriyaki Tofu immediately with steamed rice, quinoa, or sautéed vegetables for a balanced meal.
