Ingredients

  • 300 grams Whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground ginger
  • 0.25 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 60 grams Unsalted butter
  • 100 milliliters Sugar-free molasses substitute
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons Milk
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground clove
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, ground clove, and salt.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, beat the unsalted butter until creamy. Add the sugar-free molasses substitute, egg, and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.

Step 4

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.

Step 5

If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, a tablespoon at a time, until manageable.

Step 6

Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness.

Step 7

Use a pig-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the marranitos and place them onto the prepared baking sheets.

Step 8

Brush the tops of the cut dough with milk to encourage browning.

Step 9

Bake the cookies for about 12-15 minutes, or until they are slightly browned.

Step 10

Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
