Ingredients

  • 500 grams fresh or frozen mixed berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 50 milliliters water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the fresh berries under cold water if using fresh, and allow them to drain. If using frozen berries, you can use them directly from the freezer.

Step 2

Place the berries, lemon juice, and water into a medium-sized saucepan.

Step 3

Heat the saucepan over medium heat, allowing the mixture to come to a gentle simmer.

Step 4

Stir occasionally and cook for about 10-15 minutes until the berries begin to break down and release their juices.

Step 5

Use the back of a spoon to gently mash some of the larger berries for a thicker consistency, if desired.

Step 6

Stir in the vanilla extract and cinnamon if using, and continue to cook for another 2 minutes.

Step 7

Remove the compote from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. The compote will thicken as it cools.

Step 8

Serve warm or cold. This compote can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
