Ingredients

  • 180 grams Whole wheat flour
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 115 grams Unsalted butter
  • 60 milliliters Cold water
  • 3 pieces Medium apples
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons Cornstarch
  • 1 piece Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Water

Directions

Step 1

Start by preparing the dough. In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour and salt.

Step 2

Cut the cold butter into small cubes and add it to the flour mixture.

Step 3

Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, incorporate the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 4

Drizzle in the cold water, a little at a time, mixing with a fork until the dough just comes together.

Step 5

Form the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Step 6

While the dough chills, peel, core, and dice the apples into small cubes.

Step 7

Place the apples in a medium saucepan with lemon juice, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and cornstarch.

Step 8

Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the mixture is thickened, about 10 minutes. Allow to cool.

Step 9

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 10

On a lightly floured surface, roll the chilled dough to about 1/8-inch thickness.

Step 11

Cut the dough into six 6-inch squares.

Step 12

Place about 2 tablespoons of the apple filling in the center of each square.

Step 13

Fold the dough over the filling to form a triangle, pressing the edges together to seal. Use a fork to crimp and seal the edges securely.

Step 14

In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water to create an egg wash.

Step 15

Brush each turnover with the egg wash and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Step 16

Cut a small slit in the top of each turnover to allow steam to escape during baking.

Step 17

Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until the turnovers are golden brown.

Step 18

Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy your sugar-free apple turnovers!
