Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 28 ounces diced tomatoes, no sugar added
  • 6 ounces tomato paste, no sugar added
  • 1 cup beef broth, low sodium
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the onion becomes translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, being careful not to let it burn.

Step 4

Add the ground beef to the pan, using a wooden spoon to break it apart. Cook until browned and fully cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 5

Drain any excess fat from the pan.

Step 6

Stir in the diced tomatoes and tomato paste until well combined.

Step 7

Pour in the beef broth and stir to incorporate.

Step 8

Add dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper to the mixture. Stir well.

Step 9

Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium-high heat.

Step 10

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has thickened to your desired consistency.

Step 11

Remove the bay leaf from the sauce and discard.

Step 12

Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.

Step 13

Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving over your favorite pasta or spaghetti.
