Ingredients

  • 1 cup besan (gram flour)
  • 0.75 cup water
  • 0.5 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 0.25 cup tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 unit green chili, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • 0.5 teaspoon ginger, grated
  • 0.5 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 0.25 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons oil

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine besan (gram flour), cumin seeds, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt.

Step 2

Gradually add water to the dry mixture, whisking continuously to form a smooth, lump-free batter. The consistency should be like pancake batter, not too thick or too thin.

Step 3

Add the finely chopped onion, tomato, green chili, coriander leaves, and grated ginger to the batter. Mix well to combine.

Step 4

Heat a non-stick skillet or tawa over medium heat and lightly grease it with a few drops of oil.

Step 5

Once the skillet is hot, pour a ladleful of batter onto it and spread it gently into a circular shape using the back of the ladle.

Step 6

Drizzle a little oil around the edges and cook the cheela on medium flame.

Step 7

Cook until the edges start to release from the skillet and the underside becomes golden brown, approximately 3-4 minutes.

Step 8

Flip the cheela using a spatula and cook the other side until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 9

Remove from the skillet and repeat with the remaining batter.

Step 10

Serve the sugar-free besan cheelas hot with yogurt or chutney of your choice.
