Ingredients

  • 500 grams Fish (preferably Rohu or Kingfish)
  • 50 grams Tamarind
  • 1 large, finely chopped Onion
  • 2 medium, chopped Tomatoes
  • 3 slit Green chilies
  • 1 tablespoon Ginger garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon Red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Fenugreek seeds
  • 10 leaves Curry leaves
  • 1 to taste Salt
  • 3 tablespoons Oil
  • 500 ml Water

Directions

Step 1

First, soak the tamarind in 100 ml of warm water for 10 minutes, then extract the pulp and keep aside.

Step 2

Clean and cut the fish into pieces. Rinse well and set aside.

Step 3

Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and fenugreek seeds. Allow them to splutter.

Add the curry leaves and slit green chilies, sauté for a minute.

Step 5

Add chopped onions and fry until they turn golden brown.

Step 6

Stir in the ginger garlic paste and sauté until the raw smell disappears.

Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and oil begins to separate.

Mix in turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Stir well to combine.

Pour in the tamarind pulp along with 400 ml of water. Season with salt.

Bring the mixture to a boil and let it simmer for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

Gently add the fish pieces into the pan. Cover and cook on low heat for 10-12 minutes or until the fish is cooked through and tender.

Turn off the heat and let the curry rest for 5 minutes before serving.
