Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 0.125 teaspoons Ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.125 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 0.75 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 4 slices White sandwich bread
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 4 slices Ham, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk constantly for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.

Step 2

Gradually pour the milk into the roux, whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 2-3 minutes until thickened.

Step 3

Stir in the nutmeg, salt, pepper, 1/2 cup of Gruyère cheese, and all of the Parmesan cheese. Mix until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 4

Spread the Dijon mustard evenly on one side of each slice of bread.

Step 5

Layer 2 slices of ham on top of the mustard on two slices of bread. Sprinkle a small amount of the remaining Gruyère cheese over the ham.

Step 6

Place the remaining 2 slices of bread on top to form sandwiches, keeping the mustard side facing inward.

Step 7

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of butter and the olive oil over medium heat. Once melted and hot, add the sandwiches to the pan.

Step 8

Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and crispy.

Step 9

Transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread the béchamel sauce evenly over the top of each sandwich and sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese over the béchamel layer.

Step 10

Preheat your oven’s broiler and place the sandwiches under the broiler for 3-4 minutes, or until the top is bubbly and golden brown.

Step 11

Remove from the oven, let cool for a minute, slice in half, and serve immediately.
