Ingredients

  • 8 cups stale bread
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 stalks celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoons dried rosemary
  • 0.5 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 2.5 cups chicken or vegetable broth

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Spread the stale bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes or until dry and lightly toasted. Allow the bread cubes to cool slightly.

Step 2

While the bread cubes are toasting, prepare the vegetables. Finely chop the onion and celery.

Step 3

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery, and sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened and translucent.

Step 4

Stir in the dried parsley, sage, thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for another 1-2 minutes to release the fragrance of the herbs.

Step 5

Transfer the toasted bread cubes into a large mixing bowl. Pour the cooked onion, celery, and herb mixture over the bread cubes and toss to combine evenly.

Step 6

Gradually add the chicken or vegetable broth, 1/2 cup at a time, tossing gently to avoid breaking the cubes. Add just enough broth to moisten the bread without making it soggy (you may not need the full 2.5 cups).

Step 7

Transfer the mixture to a large pot or keep it in the skillet. Place it over low heat, cover, and cook for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through.

Step 8

Serve the stuffing warm as a side dish or use it as a base for stuffing poultry.
