Ingredients

  • 1 cup glutinous rice (sticky rice)
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons scallions, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon neutral oil (e.g., vegetable oil)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the glutinous rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming overly gummy.

Step 2

Combine the rinsed rice and 1.5 cups of water in a medium pot with a tight-fitting lid. Let it soak for 20-30 minutes.

Step 3

After soaking, bring the pot to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the rice simmer for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time.

Step 4

After 15 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for an additional 10 minutes to finish steaming.

Step 5

Once the rice has cooled enough to handle, wet your hands with water to prevent sticking. Scoop about 2 tablespoons of rice into your hands and gently shape it into a compact ball. Repeat until all the rice is used.

Step 6

Heat the neutral oil in a skillet over medium heat. Lightly pan-fry the rice balls until the outsides are slightly crispy and golden. Set aside.

Step 7

In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, and sesame oil to create the glaze.

Step 8

Wipe out the skillet and return it to medium heat. Pour in the glaze and let it simmer for 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened.

Step 9

Add the rice balls back into the skillet, gently toss them in the glaze until they're fully coated, and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.

Step 10

Transfer the sticky rice balls to a serving plate and garnish with chopped scallions. Serve warm and enjoy!
