Ingredients

  • 12 ounces Fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup Ruby port wine
  • 0.75 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Orange juice
  • 2 pieces Star anise pods
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh orange zest
  • 1 piece Cinnamon stick
  • 0.25 cup Water
  • 1 pinch Pinch of salt

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the fresh cranberries thoroughly under cold water and set aside to drain.

Step 2

In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the ruby port, granulated sugar, orange juice, and water. Stir well to dissolve the sugar.

Step 3

Add the star anise pods, cinnamon stick, and a pinch of salt to the saucepan. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

Step 4

Once the mixture is simmering, add the fresh cranberries. Stir gently and allow the cranberries to cook over medium heat. They will start to pop after about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the orange zest and continue to simmer for another 5–7 minutes, or until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency. Taste and adjust the sweetness if needed by adding a small amount of extra sugar.

Step 6

Remove the saucepan from heat and discard the star anise pods and cinnamon stick.

Step 7

Let the cranberry sauce cool to room temperature. As it cools, it will thicken further. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 8

Serve chilled or at room temperature alongside roasted turkey, ham, or your favorite holiday main dish. Enjoy!
