Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cans (5 oz each) canned tuna in olive oil, drained
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon capers, rinsed
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 0.25 cup pasta water or chicken broth (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the minced garlic and chopped onion. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until fragrant and the onion becomes translucent.

Step 3

Add the drained canned tuna and break it into smaller chunks with a wooden spoon. Cook for 2 minutes to warm through.

Step 4

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, capers, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

If the sauce appears too thick, stir in pasta water or chicken broth a tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached.

Step 7

Taste the sauce and adjust salt or seasonings as needed.

Step 8

Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the chopped parsley.

Step 9

Serve the sauce hot over your favorite pasta, rice, or use as a flavorful dip. Garnish with extra parsley if desired.
