Ingredients

  • 3 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 0.5 cup Water
  • 0.25 cup Honey
  • 3 tablespoons Butter
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Rolled oats (optional, for topping)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, combine milk, water, honey, and butter. Heat over low heat until warm (120-130°F or 49-54°C). The butter does not need to fully melt. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, salt, and yeast. Mix until well combined.

Step 3

Gradually pour the warm liquid mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir just until the dough starts to come together.

Step 4

Add the egg to the dough mixture and knead by hand or with a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook for about 8-10 minutes. The dough should be smooth and slightly sticky.

Step 5

Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours or until it has doubled in size.

Step 6

Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.

Step 7

Optional: Brush the top of the dough with a little milk and sprinkle it with rolled oats for a decorative finish.

Step 8

Cover the pan with a towel and let the dough rise again for 30-45 minutes, until it has risen slightly above the edge of the pan.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Once preheated, bake the loaf in the center rack for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

Step 10

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
