Ingredients

  • 4.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cups Granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 1.25 cups Warm water (around 110°F/43°C)
  • 0.25 cups Olive oil
  • 3 whole Eggs
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons Milk (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.

Step 3

Add two of the eggs to the bowl and mix the dough using a wooden spoon or your hands until it begins to come together.

Step 4

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 5

Form the dough into a ball, place it in a lightly oiled bowl, and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope, approximately 18 inches in length.

Step 7

Braid the three ropes together, pinching the ends to seal, and form the braid into a circle or a simple loaf shape. Transfer the braided dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 8

Cover with a towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes until slightly puffed.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 10

Lightly beat the remaining egg with the 2 tablespoons of milk. Using a pastry brush, coat the surface of the dough with the egg wash. Sprinkle the sesame seeds generously over the top.

Step 11

Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 12

Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
