Wash the butternut squash and apples thoroughly under running water.
Peel the butternut squash using a vegetable peeler and cut it in half lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds and discard them. Dice the squash into small, even-sized cubes approximately 1 inch in size.
Peel the apples and remove the core. Cut the apples into small chunks, similar in size to the squash cubes.
Place the diced squash and apple pieces into a medium-sized saucepan.
Add 1 cup of water to the saucepan, ensuring the ingredients are partially submerged to allow for gentle steaming.
Cover the saucepan with a lid and bring the water to a gentle boil over medium heat.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until the squash and apples are tender and can be easily pierced with a fork.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly for 5 minutes.
Transfer the cooked squash and apples to a blender or food processor. Add any remaining liquid from the saucepan to help with blending.
Blend the mixture on high until it reaches a smooth, puree-like consistency. If the puree is too thick, add a tablespoon of water at a time and blend until the desired consistency is achieved.
Allow the puree to cool completely before serving to your baby. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze in small portions for future use.
