Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef round steak
  • 0.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 0.5 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

Directions

Step 1

Trim any excess fat from the round steak and cut it into 4-6 serving-sized portions.

Step 2

In a shallow dish, combine the flour, salt, black pepper, and onion powder.

Step 3

Dredge each piece of steak in the flour mixture, coating thoroughly on both sides, and shake off the excess flour.

Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Step 5

Sear the steak on both sides until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.

Step 6

Slice the yellow onion into thin rings and add it to the same skillet. Sauté until softened and lightly caramelized, about 5 minutes.

Step 7

Deglaze the skillet by pouring in 1 cup of the beef broth, stirring to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

Step 8

Return the seared steak to the skillet and pour in the remaining beef broth. Add garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce, and stir to combine.

Step 9

Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until the steak is fork-tender.

Step 10

To make the gravy, remove the steak from the skillet and keep warm.

Step 11

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and cold water until smooth, then slowly stir it into the skillet with the simmering broth.

Step 12

Increase the heat to medium and cook the gravy, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 3-5 minutes.

Step 13

Return the steak to the skillet, spoon the gravy over the meat, and serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables.
