Ingredients

  • 1 pound beef (sirloin or flank steak), thinly sliced
  • 1 cup fresh Thai basil leaves
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 pieces Thai bird's eye chilies, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fish sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium bell pepper (red or green), thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 4 cups steamed jasmine rice (for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Prepare all ingredients: Slice the beef thinly against the grain, mince the garlic, chop the chilies, and slice the onion and bell pepper.

Step 2

In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, dark soy sauce, sugar, and water. Set aside.

Step 3

Heat a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add the vegetable oil and swirl to coat the pan.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic and chopped chilies to the pan and stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.

Step 5

Add the beef slices to the hot pan and stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes until the beef is browned but still tender.

Step 6

Add the sliced onion and bell pepper to the pan and stir-fry for another 2 minutes until the vegetables are slightly softened but still crisp.

Step 7

Pour the sauce mixture into the pan and toss everything together to coat. Stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and everything is well combined.

Step 8

Turn off the heat and immediately stir in the Thai basil leaves. Toss until the basil is wilted and fragrant.

Step 9

Serve the Spicy Thai Basil Beef over steamed jasmine rice and enjoy!
