Ingredients

  • 1 bunch Swiss chard
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons water

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the Swiss chard thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or grit. Pat dry with a kitchen towel.

Step 2

Separate the Swiss chard leaves from the stems. Chop the stems into 1-inch pieces and roughly chop the leaves into bite-sized pieces. Keep them separate as they will cook at different rates.

Step 3

Peel and finely mince the garlic cloves.

Step 4

In a large skillet or sauté pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Step 5

Add the minced garlic to the pan and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly, until fragrant but not browned.

Step 6

Stir in the chopped Swiss chard stems and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften.

Step 7

Add the crushed red pepper flakes, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper to the pan, stirring to evenly coat the chard stems with the spices.

Step 8

Stir in the Swiss chard leaves and 2 tablespoons of water. Cover the pan with a lid and let the leaves steam for 3-4 minutes, or until they are wilted and tender.

Step 9

Remove the lid and stir everything well to combine. Let any excess water evaporate if necessary.

Step 10

Drizzle the dish with lemon juice and give it a final stir before serving.

Step 11

Serve immediately as a side dish or enjoy on its own for a nutritious, spice-packed snack.
