Ingredients

  • 500 grams Ground beef or lamb
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 medium Carrots, diced
  • 150 grams Frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 250 milliliters Beef or chicken broth
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground cayenne pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Chili flakes
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 kilogram Potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 100 grams Unsalted butter
  • 125 milliliters Milk
  • 100 grams Cheddar cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).

Step 2

Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

While the potatoes cook, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.

Step 4

Add the garlic, diced carrots, and ground beef or lamb to the skillet. Cook until the meat is browned and the vegetables are softened, about 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently.

Step 5

Stir in the tomato paste, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, chili flakes, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for 2 minutes to allow the spices to bloom.

Step 6

Pour in the broth and add the frozen peas, salt, and black pepper. Mix well and simmer the mixture for 10 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly. Remove from heat.

Step 7

Mash the cooked potatoes with butter and milk until smooth and creamy. Season with salt to taste.

Step 8

Transfer the meat mixture to a baking dish and spread it out evenly. Top with the mashed potatoes, spreading them to cover the meat completely.

Step 9

Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese evenly over the mashed potatoes.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Step 11

Garnish with chopped parsley before serving. Serve piping hot and enjoy your Spicy Shepherd's Pie!
