Ingredients

  • 1 cup Red lentils
  • 2 cups Water
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 medium, finely chopped Yellow onion
  • 3 minced Garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon Cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 medium, grated Carrot
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped Fresh cilantro
  • 2 tablespoons (for frying) Vegetable oil
  • 4 Burger buns
  • 0 Optional toppings (lettuce, tomato, avocado, etc.)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the red lentils thoroughly under cold water, then combine them with 2 cups of water in a medium saucepan.

Step 2

Bring the lentils to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and most of the water is absorbed. Drain any excess water and let the lentils cool slightly.

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper, and cook for another minute until fragrant.
