Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 ounces) canned black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 0.75 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.25 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium jalapeño, minced (seeds removed for less heat)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 0.25 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for extra binding)
  • 4 pieces burger buns
  • 1 as desired lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and avocado (optional, for serving)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but with some texture remaining.

Step 2

Add the rolled oats, minced garlic, chopped red onion, minced jalapeño, ground cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, black pepper, and soy sauce to the bowl. Mix until well combined.

Step 3

If the mixture appears too wet, add breadcrumbs, one tablespoon at a time, until the mixture holds together when formed into a patty.

Step 4

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 3/4-inch thick.

Step 5

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties in the skillet.

Step 6

Cook the burger patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and crispy on the outside and heated through.

Step 7

Remove the patties from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with a paper towel to drain any excess oil.

Step 8

Toast the burger buns if desired and assemble the burgers with the black bean patties, lettuce, sliced tomatoes, avocado, or any of your favorite toppings.

Step 9

Serve immediately and enjoy your Spicy Black Bean Burgers with Oats!
