Ingredients

  • 400 g black beans (canned, drained, and rinsed)
  • 1 medium red onion
  • 2 large garlic cloves
  • 1 small jalapeño pepper
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 60 g rolled oats
  • 60 g breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 4 pieces burger buns
  • 4 pieces lettuce leaves
  • 4 slices sliced tomato
  • 4 tbsp mayonnaise or burger sauce (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until they are mostly smooth but still have some texture.

Step 2

Finely chop the red onion, garlic cloves, and jalapeño pepper. Add them to the bowl with the mashed beans.

Step 3

Add the ground cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper to the bowl. Mix well to combine.

Step 4

In a food processor or spice grinder, pulse the rolled oats until they are coarsely ground. Add the ground oats and breadcrumbs to the mixture, and stir to combine.

Step 5

Crack the egg into the bowl and mix thoroughly until the mixture holds together well. If the mixture feels too wet, add a bit more breadcrumbs.

Step 6

Using your hands, divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a burger patty.

Step 7

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and heated through.

Step 8

While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns if desired.

Step 9

Assemble the burgers by spreading mayonnaise or burger sauce on the bottom bun (optional), then layering with lettuce, a spicy bean burger patty, a slice of tomato, and the top bun.

Step 10

Serve immediately and enjoy your homemade spicy bean burgers!
