In a medium saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil over medium heat.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise. Let the spices simmer for 5 minutes to release their flavors.
Turn off the heat and add the black tea bags to the saucepan. Let the tea steep in the spiced water for 5 minutes.
Remove the tea bags and strain out the spices using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth. Discard the used spices and tea bags.
Add the granulated sugar to the hot tea and stir until fully dissolved.
Pour the sweetened spiced tea into a large pitcher. Add the remaining 2 cups of cold water to dilute the tea slightly.
Refrigerate the tea for at least 1 hour, or until thoroughly chilled.
