Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumb
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Peel and cube the sweet potatoes into roughly 1-inch pieces.

Step 2

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the sweet potato cubes and cook for 12-15 minutes or until they are tender when pierced with a fork. Drain the sweet potatoes and let them cool slightly.

Step 3

Mash the cooked sweet potatoes in a large bowl until smooth.

Step 4

Add the ground cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper to the mashed sweet potatoes. Mix until the spices are evenly distributed.

Step 5

Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the sweet potato mixture, stirring until a dough-like consistency forms. It should be soft but hold its shape when formed into balls.

Step 6

Roll the sweet potato mixture into small, bite-sized balls (approximately 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter).

Step 7

In a small bowl, beat the egg. Place the breadcrumbs in another bowl.

Step 8

Roll each sweet potato ball in the egg, then coat it evenly with breadcrumbs. Set aside on a plate.

Step 9

Heat the oil in a deep skillet or saucepan over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping in a breadcrumb – if it sizzles, the oil is ready.

Step 10

Carefully fry the sweet potato balls in batches, turning them occasionally, for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown all over.

Step 11

Remove the fried sweet potato balls using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Step 12

Serve warm, optionally garnished with chopped fresh parsley for extra flavor and presentation.
