Ingredients

  • 4 whole Pears (ripe but firm, such as Bosc or Anjou)
  • 4 cups Water
  • 0.75 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 whole Cinnamon stick
  • 3 pieces Whole cloves
  • 1 whole Vanilla bean (or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract)
  • 1 strip Orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon juice

Directions

Step 1

Peel the pears, leaving the stems intact. Cut a small slice off the bottom of each pear so they can stand upright.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan large enough to hold the pears upright, combine water, sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, vanilla bean (split and seeds scraped, or use vanilla extract), orange zest, and lemon juice.

Step 3

Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

Step 4

Carefully place the pears into the saucepan, making sure they are mostly submerged in the liquid. Reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a lid.

Step 5

Simmer the pears gently for 25-30 minutes, turning them occasionally to ensure even cooking. The pears should be tender but not mushy when pierced with a knife.

Step 6

Remove the pears from the poaching liquid and set them aside to cool slightly.

Step 7

If desired, increase the heat to medium-high and simmer the poaching liquid until it reduces into a syrupy consistency, about 10-15 minutes.

Step 8

Serve the spiced pears warm or chilled, drizzled with the spiced syrup. They pair beautifully with whipped cream, yogurt, or vanilla ice cream.
