Ingredients

  • 4 pieces ripe but firm pears (such as Bosc or Anjou)
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 0 optional toppings (e.g., whipped cream, chopped nuts, or vanilla ice cream)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Wash and dry the pears. Slice them in half lengthwise and use a spoon or melon baller to carefully scoop out the core and seeds. Optionally, remove the stem for easier eating.

Step 3

Arrange the pear halves cut side up in a baking dish just large enough to fit them snugly.

Step 4

In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.

Step 5

Sprinkle the spice mixture evenly over the pear halves.

Step 6

Drizzle the vanilla extract and lemon juice over the pears.

Step 7

Cut the butter into small pieces and place a piece on top of each pear half.

Step 8

Pour the water into the bottom of the baking dish to help the pears stay moist and create a light sauce as they bake.

Step 9

Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Step 10

Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15 minutes, or until the pears are tender when pierced with a fork and slightly caramelized on top.

Step 11

Remove the pears from the oven and let them cool for 5 minutes.

Step 12

Serve warm with your preferred toppings such as whipped cream, chopped nuts, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
