Ingredients

  • 4 large Apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 500 ml Water
  • 60 ml Apple cider vinegar
  • 200 g Granulated sugar
  • 50 g Brown sugar
  • 2 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp Ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp Ground cloves
  • 0.25 tsp Salt
  • 30 g Unsalted butter

Directions

Step 1

Peel and core the apples, then slice them into 1/4-inch thick rings. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large skillet or saucepan, combine the water, apple cider vinegar, granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and salt. Stir well to combine.

Step 3

Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugars are dissolved and the syrup is fragrant (about 3-4 minutes).

Step 4

Add the apple rings to the skillet in a single layer, ensuring they are submerged in the spiced syrup. You may need to cook them in batches if your skillet is small.

Step 5

Simmer the apple rings for 5-7 minutes per batch, flipping them halfway through, until they are tender but still hold their shape.

Step 6

Using tongs or a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked apple rings to a plate and repeat the process with any remaining apple slices.

Step 7

Once all the apple rings are cooked, add the unsalted butter to the skillet with the remaining syrup. Stir until the butter is fully melted and incorporated into the syrup.

Step 8

Pour the warm syrup over the cooked apple rings, ensuring they are evenly coated.

Step 9

Let the spiced apple rings cool slightly before serving. They can be enjoyed warm, at room temperature, or chilled.
