Ingredients

  • 4 cups Apple cider or red wine
  • 1 medium Orange
  • 2 sticks Cinnamon sticks
  • 8 pieces Whole cloves
  • 2 pods Star anise
  • 0.25 teaspoons Ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons Honey or maple syrup
  • 0.5 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 inch piece Fresh ginger

Directions

Step 1

Pour the apple cider or red wine into a medium-sized pot or saucepan.

Step 2

Slice the orange into rounds and add them to the pot.

Step 3

Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise, ground nutmeg, and the fresh ginger (peeled and slightly crushed) into the pot.

Step 4

Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Then, reduce the heat to low and let it gently simmer for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.

Step 5

Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the honey or maple syrup and the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

Step 6

Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the spices, orange slices, and ginger.

Step 7

Serve warm in mugs, and garnish with a cinnamon stick or an orange slice, if desired.
