Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.75 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for toasting buns

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and let it warm up for about 1 minute.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until they start to soften.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds, stirring frequently to prevent burning.

Step 4

Push the vegetables to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Cook the beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat from the pan.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to medium and stir the vegetables back in with the beef.

Step 6

Add the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, brown sugar, and beef broth to the skillet. Stir well to combine all the ingredients into a cohesive sauce.

Step 7

Sprinkle in the paprika, chili powder, salt, and ground black pepper. Mix thoroughly and let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.

Step 8

While the mixture simmers, lightly butter the hamburger buns and toast them in a separate skillet or under the broiler for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

Step 9

Spoon a generous portion of the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of each toasted bun. Place the top half of the bun on and serve immediately.
