Ingredients

  • 500 g Ground pork
  • 250 g Ground beef
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 medium Potato, peeled and grated
  • 125 ml Water
  • 0.5 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp Ground cloves
  • 0.25 tsp Ground allspice
  • 1 tsp Dried thyme
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 rounds Pie crust dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 Egg, beaten

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet, combine the ground pork, ground beef, and chopped onion over medium heat. Cook until the meat is browned and the onion is softened, about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to break up the meat.

Step 2

Add the minced garlic and grated potato to the skillet. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the garlic is aromatic.

Step 3

Pour in the water, then stir in the ground cinnamon, ground cloves, ground allspice, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Lower the heat to a simmer and let the mixture cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The mixture should become thickened as the water reduces.

Step 4

Remove the meat mixture from the heat and let it cool to room temperature.

Step 5

Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).

Step 6

Roll out one round of pie crust dough and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim any overhang to 1 inch.

Step 7

Spoon the cooled pork filling evenly into the pie crust.

Step 8

Place the second round of pie crust dough over the filling. Trim, seal, and crimp the edges together. Use a sharp paring knife to cut a few small slits into the top crust to allow steam to escape.

Step 9

Brush the top crust with the beaten egg for a golden finish.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

Step 11

Remove the tourtiere from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
