In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
Gradually add the warm milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until a soft dough forms, switching to hand-kneading on a lightly floured surface as needed.
Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding the remaining 0.5 cup of flour in small increments if the dough is sticky.
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
