Ingredients

  • 400 g spaghetti
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic cloves
  • 800 g canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 100 g parmesan cheese
  • 10 fresh basil leaves
  • 4 liters water

Directions

Step 1

Fill a large pot with 4 liters of water and bring to a boil over high heat. Add a pinch of salt to the boiling water.

Step 2

Meanwhile, finely chop the onion and mince the garlic cloves.

Step 3

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 4

Add the canned crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the skillet. Stir well to combine all ingredients.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.

Step 6

While the sauce simmers, add the spaghetti to the boiling water. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 7

Once the spaghetti is cooked, reserve 1 cup of the pasta water and then drain the remaining water from the pot.

Step 8

Add the drained spaghetti to the skillet with the tomato sauce. Toss to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce, adding a bit of reserved pasta water if needed to loosen the sauce.

Step 9

Grate the Parmesan cheese. Serve the spaghetti topped with freshly grated Parmesan and garnish with fresh basil leaves.

Step 10

Enjoy your Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce and Parmesan!
