  • 1 small Carrot (grated)
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 28 ounces Crushed tomatoes (canned)
  • 15 ounces Tomato sauce (canned)
  • 1 cup Beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 2 whole Bay leaves
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh basil (chopped, optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef and ground pork to the pot. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, about 8-10 minutes. Drain off excess fat if necessary, then set the cooked meat aside on a plate.

Step 3

In the same pot, add the diced onion, minced garlic, and grated carrot. Sauté over medium heat until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.

Push the vegetables to one side of the pot. Add the tomato paste to the open area and allow it to cook for 1-2 minutes to deepen its flavor, then stir it into the vegetables.

Return the cooked meat to the pot and stir to combine.

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot slightly ajar, and let the sauce stew for at least 2 1/2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

During the last 10 minutes of cooking, stir in the fresh parsley. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Remove and discard the bay leaves before serving.
