Ingredients

  • 500 grams Ground beef
  • 250 grams Ground pork
  • 100 grams Breadcrumbs
  • 50 grams Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 large Egg
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 400 grams Spaghetti
  • 800 grams Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 10 leaves Fresh basil leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 100 milliliters Water

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, 1 clove of garlic (minced), fresh parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Step 2

Using your hands, shape the mixture into meatballs about the size of a golf ball. Place them on a plate and set aside.

Step 3

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches (do not overcrowd the pan) and sear them until browned on all sides, about 5-6 minutes. Remove the meatballs and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the remaining 2 cloves of minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.

Step 5

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1-2 minutes to deepen the flavor. Then add the canned crushed tomatoes, sugar, and water. Stir to combine.

Step 6

Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Add the meatballs back into the skillet, making sure they are submerged in the sauce. Cover and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 7

While the meatballs are cooking, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water, drain the spaghetti, and set aside.

Step 8

Add fresh basil leaves to the tomato sauce and stir. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of reserved pasta water to reach your desired consistency.

Step 9

Serve the meatballs and sauce over the spaghetti. Garnish with additional Parmesan cheese and fresh basil, if desired.
