Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 medium carrot, finely diced
  • 1 celery stick, finely diced
  • 400 grams canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 400 grams spaghetti
  • 50 grams Parmesan cheese, grated (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes, until softened.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute.

Step 4

Add the ground beef to the pan and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through (about 6–8 minutes).

Step 5

Stir in the diced carrot and celery, cooking for another 3–4 minutes to soften the vegetables.

Step 6

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef stock, oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper to the pan. Mix well.

Step 7

Lower the heat to a simmer and let the sauce cook for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened and flavorful.

Step 8

While the sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the spaghetti according to the package directions. Drain and set aside.

Step 9

Taste and adjust seasoning in the bolognese sauce if needed.

Step 10

Serve the bolognese sauce over the cooked spaghetti, and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.
