Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup bourbon or dark rum (optional)
  • 0 whipped cream (optional, for garnish)
  • 0 cinnamon sticks (optional, for garnish)
  • 0 grated nutmeg (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk and heavy cream. Heat over medium heat until the mixture is warm but not boiling, stirring occasionally.

Step 2

While the milk mixture is heating, separate the egg yolks from the whites. Place the yolks in a mixing bowl and whisk them together with the granulated sugar until the mixture is pale and creamy.

Step 3

Slowly pour about 1/2 cup of the warm milk mixture into the egg yolk and sugar mixture while whisking constantly. This will temper the eggs and prevent them from curdling.

Step 4

Gradually add the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk and cream, whisking continuously.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and cook the mixture, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until it thickens slightly and coats the back of the spoon. This should take about 5-7 minutes. Do not allow it to boil.

Step 6

Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon, and pure vanilla extract. If using bourbon or dark rum, stir it in as well.

Step 7

Pour the eggnog into a large bowl or pitcher, cover it with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to chill and allow the flavors to meld.

Step 8

When ready to serve, give the eggnog a good stir. Pour into glasses and top with whipped cream, a cinnamon stick, and a sprinkle of grated nutmeg if desired.

Step 9

Serve chilled and enjoy the festive flavors of the South!
