Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, for frosting
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, for frosting
  • 0.25 cup whole milk, for frosting

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans and set them aside.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, beat 1/2 cup of softened butter and the granulated sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

Step 4

Add the eggs to the butter-sugar mixture, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.

Step 5

Alternately add the dry mixture and the 1 cup of milk to the wet ingredients, beginning and ending with the dry mixture. Mix until just combined to avoid overmixing.

Step 6

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Use a spatula to smooth the tops.

Step 7

Bake the cakes in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

Step 8

Let the cakes cool in their pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely before frosting.

Step 9

To make the chocolate frosting, beat 1 cup of softened butter and the cocoa powder in a large bowl until smooth and creamy.

Step 10

Gradually add the powdered sugar, followed by the 1/4 cup of milk and the 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, beating the mixture until the frosting is smooth and spreadable. Add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, if needed to reach the desired consistency.

Step 11

Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting evenly on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.

Step 12

Slice and serve. Store leftover cake in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
