Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef (80/20 mix)
  • 50 grams breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 4 medium-sized burger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 4 tablespoons Mrs. Ball's chutney (or similar fruit chutney)
  • 2 tablespoons peri-peri sauce
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4 whole lettuce leaves
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 0.5 medium red onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese slices

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, ground coriander, ground cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into burger patties, about 1 cm thick. Use your thumb to make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up during cooking.

Step 3

Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned on the outside and cooked to your desired doneness on the inside. If using cheese, place one slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking to let it melt.

Step 4

While the patties cook, mix the peri-peri sauce and mayonnaise together in a small bowl to create the peri-peri mayo.

Step 5

Butter the cut sides of the burger buns and toast them on a separate skillet or grill for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown.

Step 6

To assemble each burger, spread a layer of chutney on the bottom bun, followed by a lettuce leaf, a cooked patty with melted cheese, a slice of tomato, and some thinly sliced red onion. Spread the peri-peri mayo on the top bun and place it on top to complete the burger.

Step 7

Serve immediately with your choice of sides such as potato wedges, fries, or a fresh salad.
