Ingredients

  • 12 ounces spaghetti
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley or basil, chopped (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water before draining.

Step 2

While the pasta is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the ground turkey to the skillet. Break it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula and cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and fully cooked through.

Step 6

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 7

If the sauce is too thick, stir in a few tablespoons of the reserved pasta water to reach the desired consistency.

Step 8

Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet and toss to coat the pasta evenly in the sauce.

Step 9

Serve the spaghetti in bowls or on plates, then sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh parsley or basil, if desired.
