Discover the timeless charm of homemade soda bread, a rustic and easy-to-make loaf that’s ready in under an hour! This traditional Irish recipe uses just four simple ingredients—flour, baking soda, salt, and tangy buttermilk—to create a no-yeast bread with a delightfully crusty exterior and tender crumb. Perfect for beginners, soda bread skips the kneading and proofing of typical breads, relying on baking soda and buttermilk for its airy rise. With its signature cross-scored top, this golden loaf is ideal served warm with a pat of butter, a smear of jam, or as an accompaniment to hearty soups and stews. Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1.75 cups buttermilk

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined.

Step 3

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and slowly pour in the buttermilk. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix until the dough comes together. It should be soft but not overly sticky. Avoid overworking the dough.

Step 4

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it for about 30 seconds, just enough to bring it together into a ball.

Step 5

Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it onto the prepared baking sheet.

Step 6

With a sharp knife, score a deep cross (about 1/2 inch deep) into the top of the loaf. This helps the bread bake evenly and gives it its traditional look.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 8

Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Step 9

Serve warm or at room temperature with butter, jam, or alongside your favorite soup or stew.
