Ingredients

  • 30 ounces canned navy beans
  • 4 slices bacon
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 0.5 cup ketchup
  • 0.25 cup molasses
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Drain and rinse the canned navy beans, then set aside.

Step 2

Chop the bacon into small pieces. In a large pot over medium heat, cook the bacon until crisp, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and set aside, leaving the bacon fat in the pot.

Step 3

Dice the onion and mince the garlic cloves.

Step 4

Add the diced onion to the pot and cook in the bacon fat until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Stir in the ketchup, molasses, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, chili powder, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

Step 6

Add the navy beans and water to the pot. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot partially, and let the beans cook for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 8

If the mixture becomes too thick or begins to stick, add more water as needed to reach the desired consistency.

Step 9

Once the beans have thickened and flavors have melded, remove from heat. Stir in the cooked bacon pieces.

Step 10

Serve warm and enjoy as a flavorful side dish at your next barbecue.
