Ingredients

  • 4 large Yellow onions
  • 10 whole Garlic cloves
  • 4 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 sprigs Thyme sprigs (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Balsamic vinegar
  • 1 large Baguette
  • 2 tablespoons Extra-virgin olive oil (for baguette)

Directions

Step 1

Peel and thinly slice the onions into half-moons. Peel the garlic cloves and leave them whole.

Step 2

Heat a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat. Add olive oil and butter, allowing the butter to melt completely.

Step 3

Add the sliced onions and whole garlic cloves to the pan. Stir well to evenly coat them with the oil and butter mixture.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to low and sprinkle in salt and pepper. If using thyme sprigs, add them to the pan as well.

Step 5

Cook the onions and garlic slowly, stirring occasionally, for about 45-50 minutes. The mixture should become golden-brown and caramelized. Be careful not to let it burn; adjust the heat as necessary.

Step 6

Stir in the balsamic vinegar during the last 5 minutes of cooking. Remove and discard the thyme sprigs, if used.

Step 7

While the onions and garlic are cooking, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 8

Slice the baguette into 1/2-inch thick pieces and arrange them on a baking sheet.

Step 9

Brush each slice with extra-virgin olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until golden and crisp.

Step 10

Serve the warm, slow-cooked garlic and onions with the toasted baguette slices. Spoon the mixture onto the bread or serve it in a bowl for guests to build their own bites.
